Travel to Tortuguero
Tortuguero is one of the most remote places in Costa Rica and is therefore only accessible by boat or plane. Students can make accomodations for a domestic flights and or private transportation. There is also an inexpensive route, by bus, from San Jose to Tortuguero.
You will depart from the Gran Caribe-San Jose bus station (Av 13 Calle Central Terminal del Caribe) to Cariari at: 6:30, 9:00, 10:30, 13:00, 15:00, 16:30, 18:00, or 19:00.
The bus takes approximately 2 hours. From the bus station on Cariari, you will need to walk or take a taxi 5 blocks north to the local bus terminal and purchase a combination bus/boat ticket to Tortuguero via La Povona. The total cost for one way should be around $12 USD. You will need to coordinate your return based on the local water taxi/bus schedules.
The public bus from Cariari to San Jose schedule is as follows: 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, 8:30, 11:30, 13:00, 15:00, 17:30.
