Manuel Antonio is located just south of Quepos on the Pacific Coast, 132 km from San José. In this small corner of Costa Rica, tourists can find the excitement and adventure along with relaxation of the tropical vacation. Manuel Antonio is known for its expansive white sand beaches which are backed by an evergreen forest that grows right up to the high tide line. The principal habitants are primary forest, secondary forest, mangrove swamps, lagoons and beach vegetation. There is quite a varied fauna with 109 species of mammals and 184 of birds.
The Manuel Antonion National Park may be the smallest of the countries 20 nationally recognized parks, yet it is the second most visited conservation area in the country. The area is home to a number of species such as the endangered squirrel monkey (endemic to the area), white faced capuchin monkey, raccoons, three and two-toed sloths, white-nosed coaties, brown pelicans, black-collared hawks and green kingfishers. The are also encompasses 12 little isles just off the coast where you can spot a number of dolphins and, at times, group of migrating whales.
Manuel Antonio, like most destinations throughout Costa Rica, is accessible by car, taxi, private transportation providers, public and private bus services, or domestic planes.
The bus system from San Jose is a pleasant three or three and a half hour drive to Quepos (the stop just north of Manuel Antonio.) Travelors also have a number of options to take a shorter express bus, which does not make stops along the way, or a slightly longer ride on the local bus route.
The direct bus departs from the Coco Cola bus terminal (Av 1/3 Calle 16 Coca Cola) at: 6:00, 12:00, 18:00, or 19:30 and arrive in Quepos Center near Mercado. From here, if you're staying at one of the hotels on the road to Manuel Antonio, you must take a local bus or taxi to your hotel. The return buses depart from he Quepos Center to San Jose at: 6:00, 9:30, 12:00, and 17:00. You can purchase tickets in Quepos at the ticket booth behind the Pizza Hut location.
